Leclerc managed to amaze everyone by taking a splendid pole position last Saturday at the Baku Grand Prix, but unfortunately after only 2 laps Lewis Hamilton managed to overtake him by taking the lead (which, however, was unable to finish in the points). The Monegasque himself after the race explained the reasons for his pass to Sir Lewis:
“There was a piece of wood right in the middle of turn 15 – said Leclerc – I lost a lot of time there, because I cut the track and I was a bit worried that I wasn’t able to gain some space needed to defend myself from Lewis behind. I slowed down and then he passed me, and from that point on it was quite difficult. I was behind the Mercedes, in its dirty air, and I struggled a bit; as soon as I lost the DRS, in fact, Verstappen overtook me “
Presumably, however, even without the inconvenience of the Leclerc branch, at a certain point he would still have lost the leadership because as early as Friday it was realized that Mercedes and Red Bull enjoyed a higher race pace.
